Taking the step to book your first counselling session is a brave decision. But if you've never been to counselling before, you might be wondering: What actually happens? What will I talk about? Will it feel awkward?
At KGC Foundation, we want you to feel comfortable and confident as you begin your journey toward healing and wellbeing. Here's what you can expect in your first counselling session with us.
Before Your Session: Booking and Preparation
When you book with KGC Foundation, you'll have the option to choose between in-person or virtual sessions, depending on what works best for you. We offer flexible scheduling to accommodate your needs.
Our sliding-scale, pay-what-you-can model means that cost will never be a barrier to getting the support you need. You'll be asked to contribute what you're able to, ensuring that counselling is accessible to everyone.
Before your first session, it can help to:
- Think about what you'd like to talk about (but don't worry if you're not sure yet)
- Write down any questions you have for your counsellor
- Choose a quiet, private space if you're attending virtually
- Give yourself a few minutes before and after the session to settle in
What Happens in the First Session?
Your first session is all about getting to know each other and creating a safe, comfortable space for you to share. Here's what typically happens:
1. Introductions and Building Rapport
Your counsellor will introduce themselves and explain how the sessions will work. This is also a chance for you to ask any questions about the process, confidentiality, or what to expect going forward.
2. Sharing Your Story
You'll be invited to share what brought you to counselling. This might include:
- What's been happening in your life recently
- How you've been feeling emotionally or mentally
- Any specific challenges or goals you have
Remember, there's no "right" way to share your story. Your counsellor is there to listen without judgment, and you can share as much or as little as you feel comfortable with.
3. Exploring Your Needs and Goals
Together, you and your counsellor will explore what you hope to gain from counselling. This might include:
- Managing stress or anxiety
- Processing grief or loss
- Improving relationships
- Building coping strategies
- Simply having a safe space to talk
4. Creating a Plan Forward
Your counsellor will work with you to create a plan that feels right for you. This might include how often you'll meet, what areas you'll focus on, and any tools or techniques that might help.
What If I Don't Know What to Say?
It's completely normal to feel nervous or unsure in your first session. You might not know where to start, or you might feel like your problems aren't "big enough" to talk about.
Here's the truth: whatever you're feeling is valid, and your counsellor is there to help you find the words.
If you're struggling to start, your counsellor will gently guide the conversation with questions and prompts. There's no pressure to have everything figured out—that's what the sessions are for.
Confidentiality and Safety
Everything you share in your counselling sessions is confidential. Your counsellor will explain the limits of confidentiality (such as if there's a risk of harm to yourself or others), but otherwise, what you say stays between you and your counsellor.
Your safety and privacy are our top priorities at KGC Foundation.
How Long Are Sessions?
Each counselling session at KGC Foundation is 45 minutes long. This gives you enough time to explore your thoughts and feelings without feeling rushed, while also leaving space for reflection afterward.
What Happens After the First Session?
After your first session, you and your counsellor will decide together how often you'd like to meet. Some people benefit from weekly sessions, while others prefer fortnightly or monthly check-ins. It's entirely up to you and what feels right for your journey.
You might also be given some gentle suggestions or reflections to think about between sessions, but there's no homework or pressure—just an invitation to continue the work at your own pace.
It's Okay to Feel Nervous
Starting counselling can feel vulnerable, and that's okay. It's a sign that you're taking your wellbeing seriously and choosing to invest in yourself.
At KGC Foundation, we're here to walk alongside you with compassion, care, and respect. You don't have to face this alone.
