How to Talk to Your GP About Your Mental Health

FoundationFor many people, the hardest part of getting mental health support isn't the therapy itself — it's making that first appointment and finding the words.

If you've ever sat in a GP's waiting room rehearsing what to say, or left without mentioning the real reason you came, this post is for you.

Why It Feels So Hard

Talking about mental health still carries stigma — even in a medical setting. Many people worry about being dismissed, being put on medication they don't want, or simply not being believed. Others don't know how to describe what they're feeling, or fear taking up too much of the doctor's time.

These feelings are valid. And they shouldn't stop you from getting help.

Before Your Appointment

  • Write it down. Jot down how you've been feeling, how long it's been going on, and how it's affecting your daily life. You don't need to read it out — just having it written helps you feel prepared.
  • Be specific. Instead of "I've not been feeling well," try "I've been feeling anxious most days for the past few months and it's affecting my sleep and my ability to work."
  • Be honest. GPs are trained to help with mental health. The more honest you are, the better they can support you.

During Your Appointment

Start with something simple: "I've been struggling with my mental health and I wanted to talk to someone about it." That's enough to open the door.

If you feel rushed, it's okay to say: "This is important to me — can we make sure we have time to discuss it?"

What Might Happen Next
